Stockholm University offers a prestigious scholarship designed for highly qualified international students enrolling in Master’s programs, particularly those from countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland. This competitive award provides full exemption from tuition fees, making it a standout option for excellent students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Stockholm University Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Hold citizenship from a country outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland.
  • Be required to pay tuition fees as part of the admissions process.
  • Be accepted into a Master’s programme at Stockholm University during the first international admission round.
  • List Stockholm University as first choice in your application via the centralized admissions system.

Selection is primarily based on academic excellence.

Scholarship Benefits

Once awarded, the scholarship grants:

  • Complete waiver of tuition fees for the full Master’s programme.
  • Coverage applies to the tuition fee only—living expenses, travel, and insurance are not included, and must be managed independently.

Scholarship Available at Stockholm University

  • Swedish Institute Scholarships: The Swedish Institute (SI), a government agency, offers scholarships each year for international students. Only students with citizenship from certain selected countries are eligible for an SI scholarship.
  • Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP)
  • Swedish Institute Scholarship Pioneering Women in STEM: The application to the Women in STEM scholarship is similar to that of the Stockholm University Scholarship and has the same deadline. That means that if you are eligible for this scholarship, you will receive a link automatically to your e-mail after the admission results are published. Please note that the link for the Stockholm University scholarship and the Women in STEM scholarship are separate. If you wish to apply to both, you have to fill in two different application forms. 
  • Scholarships in Arbitration Law: Two scholarships are also usually available to specifically study the master programme in International Commercial Arbitration Law (ICAL). These are the Stockholm Arbitration Scholarship (SAS) and the Swedish Arbitration Association (SAA) Scholarship. These scholarships cover the cost of the tuition and are therefore a funding opportunity for students with citizenships outside the EU/EEA.
  • Stockholm Trio Scholarship: f you are a fee-paying student admitted to a joint master’s programme within the university alliance Stockholm Trio, you can apply for the Stockholm Trio Scholarship. The scholarship covers the full tuition fee.
  • Eligible master’s programmes:
  • Master’s Programme in Molecular Techniques in Life Science
  • Master’s Programme in Biostatistics and Data Science
  • The university alliance Stockholm Trio is a partnership between Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University.

Required Documents

After admission, eligible students receive an email with a link to the scholarship application form. You will need to provide:

  • Personal contact information (email, nationality, etc.).
  • Confirmation of study admission at Stockholm University.
  • Academic details such as GPA, transcripts, degree certificates.
  • A short motivational statement (max ~500 words) describing how you can contribute academically and culturally to Stockholm University.

How to Apply

  1. Apply via University Admissions (Sweden): Submit your application to Stockholm University for a Master’s programme. Remember to list it as your first preference.
  2. Wait for admission results: If accepted in the first international admission round, you qualify automatically to receive the scholarship application form.
  3. Submit the scholarship form promptly: Fill in your details and motivation statement as soon as you receive the link.
  4. Await final decision: Scholarship recipients are notified via email by end of April.
  5. Pay tuition fee: The scholarship waives tuition; only a nominal administrative fee (about €130–€140) may apply.

  • Once accepted by Stockholm University, the scholarship is managed through internal email invitations—no separate public scholarship portal.

The Stockholm University Scholarship is an excellent opportunity for international students outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland who have earned admission to a Master’s programme. While it does not cover living costs, tuition fee exemption removes one of the largest barriers to studying in Sweden.
